The Universal Forum of Cultures, held in Barcelona in 2004, commissioned Nacho Duato and the Compañía Nacional de Danza to create an original piece on the subject of torture to be premiered at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Nacho Duato: “Tired of seeing images of violence and torture of every possible kind, I felt the need to translate all this terror into movement. Herrumbre is a call to reflection, not a dogmatic work; I want to provoke people to meditate on this subject – an issue that occurs daily all over the world and not so far from us.”

The title suggests iron oxide as an image of a blackened human soul. The word appears in the poem “Chatarra” by Ángel González that never fails to be included in the handbills presenting the piece.

With the aid of both concrete and environmental sounds, pure frequencies and various percussion instruments, a series of places are formed: sound scenarios in which to develop the action. The idea was to build a sort of soundtrack to transport us to physical and temporal spaces, while remaining abstract. It was primarily a work of sound architecture.
