Treblinka – 18 Solo Viola Fragments for Yuval Gotlibovich
Music: Pedro Alcalde
Viola: Yuval Gotlibovich
BACKGROUND
The aim of the project was to compose fragments of a secular Kaddish. Without words.
J.K.: “In fragmentation, everything is contained: the voids, the blank spaces, the rupture through everything, the shreds of memory, the unsaid, the unspeakable, the unfinished, the taboos, the trauma, the mourning, the individuality and singularity, the splinters…”
TITLE
Treblinka was an extermination camp situated northeast of Warsaw, in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.
MUSIC
The score consists of four sections: A – B – C – D. Each performance of the work may involve a different arrangement of the fragments.
A: Fragments that use primordial elements of Hebrew origin.
B: Fragments with abstract, rootless sounds.
C: Mourning fragments as in section A, but without the primordial root elements.
D: Fragments without musical tone.
SOUND PALETTE
For the execution of this work, two viola instruments are required: one with the normal tuning of the strings and another with scordatura, for the fragments of section A. The normally tuned viola must have a chinrest, as it is used in the performance.
